Evening things out

I had my first appointment yesterday (at 17 weeks) and we found out that we are having a GIRL! Audrey and Alyse are thrilled. Michael is happy (as long as the girls don't get ahead of the boys). Josh is a little confused (he wants to see "that baby girl" to know for sure). And Jacob has turned a major corner and is mostly hugs and happiness.

May Happenings at the Alan Petersen house

We have had a busy month as I am sure all of you have as well. It started with Alan going out of town to Vegas for a convention. Almost the minute he walked out the door I started a project. I decided to dig up the existing weed garden and plant a vegetable garden. It was a ton of work and I loved every second of it. It just feels so right to be outside digging in the dirt. Alan did not want me to plant a garden due to the many and various animals that would love some new plants to munch on. After about 15 hours of digging, pulling, shoveling, rototilling, fertilizing and watering I was ready to plant. I had quite a time using the borrowed rototiller by myself. I only got two major bruises and almost lost a toe. I planted tomatoes, carrots, peas, beans, cucumbers, zuchinies, pumpkins, watermelons and sunflowers. I used my recycled shredded paper for mulch between the rows. I have lots of rabbit and deer deterents out but I already have deer tracks through the garden. I bought the stuff for a fence but convincing Alan to help me put it up has not quite happened yet.
Luke had his first haircut and I ended up cutting off most of his curl. It does not seem to be coming back. I hate losing their curls but they have to grow up I guess. Mark had a performance at school called "Planetary Jammin'". He was very intensely singing and was the police man to all the kids around him to be quiet, look straight ahead, it is your turn now, pay attention and so on. He did a great job and I could hear his singing above the all the other kids. Mark and Bradley finished a great soccer season this month. We thought that Alan got a pretty lucky shot with the soccer picture. Mark did not have much of a clue when the season started how to play but he got pretty good by the end. He loves being goalie and did a great job at it when his team supported him. The other teams got some shots in when he was the only one around to defend the goal. Bradley had a lot of fun in soccer. Not so much on the field but eating the snacks after the games. He likes to run at the back of the pack looking ready all the time. When he did get in the action he usually had good results. Bradley also had a birthday on May 15th. We did a GI Joe camouflage birthday. We had to find tiny plastic soldiers hidden in the grass, do an army training obstacle course, target practice with water bombs, unwrap the bomb(present wrapped 15 times) and tank, tank, grenade (duck, duck, goose). Everyone had a great time. Alan and I had fun decorating the cake together. I love that he helps me with things like that. I didn't include pictures of Mark's first piano recital which he did very well at. He was so excited all week to have his two and a half minutes of fame. The boys have had lots of end of the year activities including field trips, performances and pride days. We are excited for summer and the relaxed fun that it brings. We would love some summer visitors if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

My favorite older sister....

Happy Birthday Angela!
I hope you are enjoying your extended birthday...I agree with Jody's rule of a Sunday birthday getting to extend to Monday. Sounds good to me. I love you and miss you a ton! You deserve to have a great birthday and here is why...

1. You were willing to give up your life to save mine once...remember when you threw your body on top of mine when you thought our ceiling fan was shaking so bad that it was going to come down on me in the trundle bed? That was so nice of you.

2. You have waxed my legs and half the admiration in that is that you were willing to look at my hairy legs so many times before the wax took it off. I especially think it was funny when you were holding the strips with the waxed hair on them when you answered your door. The person at the door asked you if you were doing an art project...not quite. Thanks for not explaining what we were actually doing.

3. You did so incredibly in the Miss Arizona pageant. You were beautiful and I was so proud of you and proud to be your sister. You were talented and so intelligent in your interview questions...you probably didn't get as much help from Dad as I did, and you still were way better than me. I really do admire your speaking ability.

4. You can handle so much! Running a household with 6 kids, teaching Company G, F Troupe, Summer Music Theater, Kelly's Pest Control, Primary President...how do you do it?

5. I remember Rachael Eucker and I idolized you and Candace when you guys were in high school. I always told Rachael that I wanted to be just like you when I grew up.

6. Sharing a room with you for so many years. I love that picture of us asleep in a queen bed, I am 3 or so and you are about 8, and our arms are linked together while we were sleeping.

7. Coming up to visit you all by myself when you were at BYU. WE had a fun time!

8. I remember everyone laughing once when you were saying how much you liked the ice that we had gotten...but the funny thing is, is I understood exactly what you meant. It was smooth, the shape was cool...

9. Commander Swoosh

10. I loved when you and Buffie taught Krista, Leisel and I a flag and rifle routine up at the cabin.

11. You crying when you found out Alex was a boy. I think your sadness went away really fast once you saw how cute he was.

12. I remember you trying really hard to make sure you looked really good on Jody's first Sunday back from his mission. It was fun to hang out with you and Jody when you were dating...oh yeah, it still is fun.

13. You always helped me get ready when I needed you. Specifically I remember you doing my hair for my 6th grade pictures and hair and makeup for my prom, and helping me with makeup for my wedding.

14. Phone conversations now that I live in Utah! It's always fun to talk and laugh with you.

Well, no matter what anyone says, I know you are bright, Ang. You are such a fun person and always willing to serve and put others ahead of yourself. Our family wouldn't be the same without you!

Happy Birthday Andrew

Sorry for the late post, but you were over here late on Thursday and Friday night, and I'm sure I have a good excuse for Saturday, and here we are today. So, although it's late, I wanted to make sure and blog a few good memories.

First, I am trying to teach Braelyn what I should have figured out way sooner, and that is don't be such a boss to your younger brothers when you're babysitting. It usually turns out badly for all involved. For example, you might get chased with a big red plastic bat that was being wielded with such force it actually made a hole in the door that you barely managed to get shut before said bat was swung.

Secondly, I learned that it's really just easier to come home on time. One usually learns these things from watching older brothers and sisters, but you were kind enough to take the heat so that I could figure this out without numerous groundings to let the lesson sink in.

Thirdly, I learned (again from a younger sibling) that going with a hair cut that mom and dad don't approve of will not start your summer off on the right foot. Consequently, through my rebellious, wild teenage years I never did anything crazy with my hair.

Quick memories:

*Watching Andrew in Oklahoma. You were really good and I was proud of you.

*I'm glad you followed the path I did in high school and endured some of the less fun things that came with choir so that you could enjoy the awesome moments as well. Also, BYU Hawaii, that was awesome.

*Being chased by not only bats, but rakes and other various yard tools (again, the bossy thing)

*Playing games together when we were little.

*Road trips with Alan and Andrew were always fun. Sometimes I felt pulled between wanting to be mature and hang out with Aaron, or be silly and laugh with the boys. (Not that Aaron wasn't fun, I was just under the pressure to think of intelligent things to say)

*Being afraid that Andrew was lost forever, only to find him hiding in the trough with Adam White (by the way, that really grossed me out)

*You are an awesome Dad to your girls, and I'm sure you will be to your son. I love how you get down and play with them and really take time to listen to them. You are a great example.

Well, I'm sure I could go on and on as I have evidenced before, but I will refrain. I am excited that you and your family will be here soon. I really like that we were friends when we were little, and now that we're adults we're even better friends. I love you. Happy Birthday.

Angela- The one syllable wonder of a sister

Ok, maybe it was a preparative stance. You probably understood that you would have little time in your life for any unnecessary item. Think of all the time you would have saved if everyone addressed you with the one syllable version of your name. If you would like, I will get everyone to start now. If they won't do it, I will then ask them if they would like their childs teeth tipped to the left or the right. That usually gets quick cooperation. Oh yeah, I will now take this time to tell you about my trip to Vegas with Mom and Dad. I spent about an hour over at the massage chairs with Dad. He really enjoyed the relaxation and said they were great. He was ready to pull the trigger, then he backed down. We'll get you there someday dad. If you ever come over to my house and ask one of my kids to rub a painful bur on your foot, I will buy you a chair myself.

Happy birthday Angela. I would be remiss, no downright rude if I did not just mention that Wisconsin is in and of itself a state. I know, you had just woken up. Wow, 32 years old and 6 kids. There are only 6 right? I can't spend too much time as I have a test to study for. That is the truth. Angela took Jeremy and me to 7-eleven more times than I walked there. Angela could put two and two toghether faster than Chuck Woolery. I remember one summer staying up late with Angela most nights watching Magnum PI. She couldn't get enough of the tall dark and handsome. I couldn't get enough of Higgins' forehead. Well, at least we know why she fell for Jody. I love you, and I hope the day has gone well.

Alan

Hey, I've got an idea

Andrew)Hey Alan, let's go upstairs and get a cookie.
Alan)No, last time we did that you went and told on us.
Andrew) Not this time, I promise
Alan) No, you did that the time before too. I'll just wait 'til we get one in our lunch
Andrew) Please, I promise I won't tell this time.
Alan) OK, but if you tell this will be the last time
5 minutes later
Alan) MMM that was a good cookie.
Andrew) Alan, I feel bad that we took a cookie, I think I'm going to go tell mom
Alan) No, you promised you wouldn't tell.
Andrew) I know, but I have to
2 minutes later
Mom) Alan come upstairs
I go upstairs with 3 pairs of underwear and 2 pairs of levis on- not an easy feat.

Well Andrew could talk me into a lot of things. First of all, I apologize for not writing sooner. I was caught up in a web of misunderstandings and it took a while to finish the Sudoku puzzle I started. I am proud of you for finishing Dental School. A few more memories.

Andrew kissed a girl before I did. This may have had something to do with the fact that Andrew spent a lot of time with the goats, but I may be mistaken. I mean, he beat me by a few years. Sorry Jessica, but the truth must be spoken.

OK, enough of the memories, I was getting tired. I remember beating Andrew at just about everything we did. Board games were tough, but you could usually get Andrew to feel sorry for you. Anyway, I would like to list some things that I still beat him at today.

I beat you to age 29. No argument there, so just hold your horses.
I weigh more than you. Some would say this is a loss, but I ask you this, are wrestlers allowed to wrestle up a weight class or down? The heavier you are, the better, so no argument there, I win.
I have one less torn ACL than you, I win.
I have had more stitches than you, I win. You were the cause of a few of them, so you have nobody to blame but yourself.

That is an exhuastive list. Did you ever pay me for the supercliffhangers racetrack?
Well, Happy Birthday, I'm proud of you for finishing dental school. Good luck on those boards.

Alan

Andrew's Birthday!

Well, how could I let Andrew's birthday pass (ok, so I am already late, but I wanted to do this anyway) without telling him how much I love him and am so glad he is my brother. It's been so fun having you as the brother right older than me and doing so many things together over the years. At least, that is, once we started actually liking eachother and enjoying being around eachother. :) (sorry for those years I know I was a bit of an annoyance)

Memories:
1. This first one is actually during the time when we still weren't getting along all that well, and maybe that's why I remember this so well and it meant so much. When our stake went up to BYU for Youth Conference I was walking with some of my friends past the basketball court where Andrew was playing ball with some of his friends. He came over to me and gave me a hug. He must have said something, but I can't remember what it was. But the hug did let me know that even though we fought sometimes, I knew Andrew loved me. It made me feel good.

2. I loved going on choir trips with Andrew. My freshmen, his junior year, we both made All-State choir so about 10 of us went down to Tucson for the weekend. It was fun being known as your little sister. I also remember you being especially proud that I made it as a freshmen when Queen Kathleen Walters (also, do you remember the cape?) hadn't made it. It was funny.

3. Another choir trip. My sohpmore, his senior year, we went to California. Two of my friends were dating/interested in two of his friends, but my friends still told me they wanted me to hang out with the two couples. Andrew came and told me I needed to not hang out with them, so they could just have fun with eachother. It kind of hurt my feelings at first, but then Andrew wanted me to come hang out with him and his other friends. That definitely made me feel cool.

4. Taking ballroom dance with Andrew. 1-2-3-chachacha! Oh, boy, what a blast!

5. Andrews sense of humor is great. I remember when he (and Jessica, I think) gave me the Little Miss Scatterbrain book. I think Amber got Little Miss Fickle. It still makes me laugh when I see the book.

6. Andrew has great taste in music. I loved when he and Jessica lived at Mom and Dad's with us, and Andrew would always play the music from his computer. I burned several of them onto a couple of CD's for myselt. I'm kind of against copying music, but I like those CD's so much I can't bring myself to throw them away...

7. Our "Groundhog's Day" date with Adam and that girl you took. It was fun to double with my brother, and that may have been the only time I ever did it! (when both siblings were single)

8. When Andrew cut the tail off of my Care Bear and threw my My Little Pony into the street and it got an oil stain all over it.

9. Andrew wrote me the nicest letters while he was on his mission. It was nice that he wrote personal letters to me and they were always so complimentary. It was during the last year of high school and first year of college and I was trying to figure out how to talk to boys, how to date boys, whether boys even wanted to date me...Andrew's letters always made me feel good.

Andrew, I love you! You are a great person. You love your wife, and you are such a fun dad. I love how much you love and are entertained by your kids. Thanks for being a great brother!

Update from Aaron and Melissa

It's been quite a while since our first post.
I've decided that the more kids we have in school the faster time flies.
Our kids can hardly wait for school to end and summer to start.
(I'm as ready as they are to be done with book reports and science projects.)
The kids have already tried to get in the pool - but we are true Arizonans - it was too cold!

Have you guessed? We have a little news...
Sometime around November 15th we are expecting a little addition.

me and my baby!

William enjoyed Easter, playing with the eggs, and we got him a little football. And of course Don and I enjoyed all of the Easter candy that the Easter Bunny put in his basket. I know I better enjoy eating the candy out of his basket while I can, cause he'll get too smart for that trick sometime. AS you can tell by his smile, Will loves being outside. I am so glad the weather is so nice now! Hope you all had a nice Easter too...we love you! Posted by Picasa

Tallons Eggs

Our Easter was very last minute. We found an easter basket at Albertsons Saturday night, and we only had 6 easter eggs to hide. After he found three eggs we took them and hid them again and again and again and again. It was a never ending easter egg hunt!! He loved it so much we have been playing find the eggs the past few days. It was a very nice Easter and it was fun to watch Tallon go on his first hunt.
Andrew and Jessica came over for dinner last night, and Tallon and Hadley got spagetti-ed so we got some cute bath shots.

Happy Easter

I wanted to wish everyone a belated happy Easter. We had an unusually action packed weekend. Alan smoked his pork and brisket for Friday. We had neighbors and friends from school and church over. It was perfect. It got up to 91 degrees that day and we were a little worried about the heat but it cooled off beautifully and everyone seemed to have a great time. I am really going to miss our deck and amazing back yard. You just don't get the green sloping hills and all the beautiful trees in Arizona. The trees have all their new leaves and blossoms on them. St. Louis is stunning right now. There are tulips everywhere and everything is that bright new green with white, pink, purple, and fuchsia blossoms. I never knew spring could be quite this amazing. Maybe I appreciate it a little more because the cold winter that seemed to last forever is finally over. I hear we had better enjoy this while it lasts because it gets hot and humid very soon.

Saturday we planned a very last minute Easter egg hunt. We had two other families over from the ward and ate leftovers from Friday night. It turned out great. You really can't go wrong with good food and hunting for eggs and candy. After Luke found his first egg he was perfectly content to sit on the lawn and explore the candy inside. His total score was two eggs. The other kids all found quite a bit more. It was nice.

Sunday morning we were able to celebrate our Savior with a breakfast on the porch in the early morning. We ate more great food and read from the scriptures and talked of the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was a beautiful morning with birds singing, trees swaying and a cool breeze blowing. I am so grateful for the knowledge of a Savior that loves us and now guides our prophet and our church. I have been reading the New Testament lately in the four gospels and am so grateful for the record that we have of Christ's life and his ministry. I know that he lives today. Mark and I were talking this morning and he said that he would love to go and see the tomb where Jesus was buried. I told him about Jerusalem and how far away it is and how much I would love to go and see it as well and to walk where Jesus walked and feel the spirit of the Holy Land. Isn't it great that we really don't have to go all the way to Jerusalem to feel that spirit. We talked about the temple and that Jesus walks there today and we can invite that same spirit into our homes when we are doing what is right. Mark is very sensitive to the spirit and always identifies it when he feels it. He said, "I feel good just talking about it mom."

After stake conference we went over to a friends in the ward for dinner. It was fun to be with other people and to take our minds off of the family time we were missing.

I am done rambling. I am grateful for my family and for the joy that I feel from family, nature, friends, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter Sunday! I am trying to post some pictures but it is not working. We will see….
